The pigeon is back! When I was working in a public library and a new Mo Willems’ pigeon book came out, there was great celebration for we knew we had a new winner for story time. These books are perfect for reading aloud and audience participation.
In this new book, the pigeon is heading for school, reluctantly. He has all the excuses why he shouldn’t, but in the end, he eventually admits, in a small voice, how scared he is. Working through this, however, he gets used to the idea, and seeing the bus that will transport him there is a clincher!
This is brilliant, as all Mo Willems’ books are. The usual speech bubbles and panels are used to full effect, and there is an obvious link to some of his other books. Metafiction plays a part when the pigeon points out that “reading can be hard with one big eye”!
This book is so much fun. It will be a wonderful addition to fans of Pigeon, and will join the already large collection of books preparing young ones for the first day of school.
Many thanks to Walker Books for supplying this book for review.
