Gregg Dreise has created a wonderful tribute to his tradition and heritage. Told in verse form, this picture book describes a group of Aboriginal people celebrating their culture and their land. As they work with their land and elements from it, including ochre, fire, charcoal and the making of musical instruments, the young and old prepare for a corroboree. The pride of the characters’ culture and importance of passing on knowledge and love of this culture is overtly expressed through the combination of the verbal and visual texts.
Double page spreads mix with small vignette illustrations. Bright yet soft colours are used throughout that make the viewer feel welcome and involved in the narrative. The colour of the land and sun are an important element in the verbal text and is shown equally in the visuals.
This book will do well in school and public libraries, there is much to enjoy and learn.
