Working in a school library, the only time I get to work work poetry withym students is when I promote and discuss verse novels. So I was excited to receive Solli Raphael’s book Limelight. It came at a time when I was book talking verse novels with my Year 7 and 8 classes, what great timing!
Solli Raphael is a slam poet, and at the age of 12, performed at the Sydney opera House. His passion for poetry shines through the pages as he explores poetry in many ways, including poetic devices, slam poetry, and writing and performing poetry. Prompts are provided for when one suffers writer’s block, and there is practical help for preforming tips from this young expert. The second half of the book includes Solli’s original poetry.
Throughout is the message of not only using poetry to make a difference, but also working with one’s passion. This is an inspirational book for any age, most importantly teens, for it is written in a language by a member of the audience for whom it is intended.
Many thanks to Penguin Random House for supplying this book for review.
