Nell wants to be a dinosaur in her splendidly green dinosaur costume. But today is her Aunt’s wedding and Nell said she would be flower girl. She has a new purple dress to wear, but unfortunately it is in her old favourite colour, her new favourite colour is dinosaur green. After many arguments with her parents, and arriving just a little late, Nell wears her flower girl dress, but has a surprise for everyone.
Many parents will relate to Nell’s parents’ predicament in this fun picturebook for young ones. Nell is strong willed and determined, solving her problem in an ingenious way. She knows just how to manipulate her father by “giving him my absolute most saddest face, the one that makes him give me ice cream”, but is a little surprised when it does not work on this occasion! Tom Jellett is a master at depicting people and family situations in his familiar style and his visuals work well with the verbal text.
The end papers are particularly effective. The front end papers are covered with dinosaur scales, while the back end papers are littered with rose petals, incorporating important elements of the text.
This is a must for public and school libraries and will, I am sure, be a firm favourite for years to come.
Many thanks to Allen & Unwin for supplying this book for review.
