These hard cover, large format board books are perfect for little ones learning about the world. In On the Farm we visit a farm. We look for the farmer’s boots, kittens, eggs and missing baby animals by lifting the flaps, while in Off We Go we look for food to take, passengers on the bus and various items at our destinations. There are many other items and people in the pictures to promote opportunities for discussion and oral language development. There are also opportunities for physical interaction. Along with the flaps to lift there is a circle cut from each right hand page and when it is turned, a small animal from the previous left hand page is incorporated in the following illustration. This adds fun to the reading and enables young viewers to interact with the physical components of the book.
All double page spreads are without borders and have clear, bright illustrations. The illustrations are two dimensional and simplified, an important aspect of books for babies and toddlers. The characters are of mixed race and the farmer is a woman, a welcome inclusion in books intended for a young audience, books that could possibly be a child’s first.
I am sure these will be pored over many, many times and will become favourites.
Many thanks to Bloomsbury for supplying these books for review.
