Elephant and Piggie have big plans to go for a drive. As they collect everything they need they finally come to the most necessary item, a car. Lucky for Elephant, he has Piggie, who is very adaptable at planning and changing what they can play.

Elephant and Piggie have a large following with the preschool crowd and it is easy to see why. Mo Willems is able to communicate to both audiences with his picturebooks, those reading them aloud and young listeners. The cartoon like illustrations, with the verbal text in speech bubbles, is a brilliant introduction to not only picturebooks but also graphic novels. The double page borderless spreads, sometimes with only half of Piggie visible on the right hand edge as he runs to fetch the next item on Elephant’s demands, invite the young audience to feel part of the narrative. This would make a brilliant story time book, begging for the young audience to join in with Elephant and Piggie’s sing-song as each new item is added to the plan. Now in soft cover, this is a must have!

Suitable story time themes include transport and friends, elephants and pigs.
